Red Lerille – 1960 Mr. America Champion

At the age of 15 Red was a skinny red-haired kid who was inspired by his Uncle Horolds muscles. Red’s Dream was to be Mr. America and to own a gym one day. Red’s dream was spurred on during a conversation with Joe Gold in 1953. Joe Gold (founder of Gold’s Gym and World Gym International) really seemed to like Red, even though he was a kid at the young age of 17. One Saturday over lunch, Joe looked at a magazine with Bill Pearl on the cover and told Red that “You could win Mr. America one day”, and from that day Joe became Red’s mentor. After Mr. Orleans, Mr. Audubon Park, Mr. Navy and several other titles, Reds dream was realized in 1960 when he won the title of Mr. America. Soon after winning the Mr. America title Red continued making his dreams reality when he opened up his own gym on January 13, 1963. Red Lerilles Health and Racquet club continues to grow and change lives to this day.

IRBO™ ★ I’d Rather Be…Outside

IRBO I'd Rather Be Outside

“You are meant to be outside. Put down your phone, turn off your computer and embrace your true human nature.

IRBO™.  I’d Rather Be…Outside. Not an option.”

The original muscle beach in Santa Monica, California is the sacred birthplace of the modern fitness movement. The term “workout” originated from the muscle men, circus performers and the world’s best athletes who performed physical feats of hard work on the beach while enjoying the great outdoors. Turn off the computer and embrace your true human nature.

Legendary Bodybuilders and Athletes are constantly expressing their natural need to be outside. We are drawn outdoors and we can use our workout as a chance to fulfill that need. With the mission of Lifting the Human Spirit™, Mr. America encourages you to find a way to take your training outside this month. Go for a run where you might stumble upon deer and other wildlife. Do yoga on the beach. Swim in the ocean or a lake. Use playground bars. Find ten crossfit workouts you can do outside. Whatever works for you…take it outdoors whenever possible!

This is IRBO, a lifestyle change that pushes you to work hard while enjoying the outdoors. It’s not an option. You will find yourself more centered and more energetic as you allow nature to recharge your battery. You will be following in the footsteps of legendary athletes and muscle men who will tell you that improving your mind is just as important as improving your body.

Follow us on social media as we share tips this month on how to workout while enjoying the great outdoors!
